Hi, My name is Derek Dey. I graduated from art school in Aberden Scotland with a BA in Drawing and Painting. After college I exhibited in Aberdeen, Edinburgh, and in the new Inverness theatre atrium. From this period my interest in anatomy, natural form, color and the esential idea that the universe held to aesthetic qualities of elegance, helped shape my life and work moving it towards idealisms. In part the inner world of psychology and spirituality was also awakened through various experiences at this formative stage.
In a move to America, the exploration of art, life, and the techniques of the trade, opened to multimedia explorations and airbrush work which was synthesized into the traditional framework I already enjoyed. However, art essentially remained as a vehicle for the expression of inner inspirations and increasingly moved to both my personal world and to ideas and archetypal motifs which continualy fascinated me.
In later life mastery of ones world leads to processes and freedoms not dreamt of in youth, so paintings have additionaly moved to 3D interpetations and other innovations without loosing the core of the craft tradition which underpins the works. Artwork is nevertheless, not a rapid process for me. Other factors always integrate themselves into paintings. For example, the changing light moving from Scotland to Florida then to Arizona did more for color than any school of theory could ever do. The deepening emotional life and children also filters in to consciousness defining emotional color, as it were. Ultimately though it is the viewer who completes an artwork, so sometimes its best not to say too much. I hope you enjoy these works. Thank you for your time, all the best.
